Just got home from a Harrah%26#39;s charter trip to Reno. The first day was a long travel day (of course we didn%26#39;t have to stay up so late gambling but that%26#39;s another story). We ate at Harrah%26#39;s buffet because it was close and we were starved. It was good but nothing overwhelming.
The next morning we ate at Cal Neva%26#39;s restaurant on the second level. Good breakfast at a good price. Spent the day checking out all the area casinos. No luck anywhere. Ate dinner at Fitzgerald%26#39;s - the prime rib. It was quite good except for the bread which was pretty tasteless. Went to the Greg London show that evening and enjoyed it very much. Nice weather until evening when it got very windy.
Monday morning we took the hotel shuttle to the airport and rented a car from Advantage. Only around $13/day including taxes. They shuttle you to the car which is out of the airport but very close by. Drove to Peg%26#39;s Glorified Ham %26amp; Eggs for breakfast due to everything I read on Trip Advisor. It was everything we had heard and more. WOW! What a tremendous breakfast! Husband had the Ham %26amp; Eggs which was so large it was served on a big skillet. I had the eggs benedict that was also excellent. We then drove south on 395 to the Mt. Rose Hwy over to Lake Tahoe. Mt. Rose Hwy is a wonderful drive. Snow on the mountains and absolutely beautiful. We stopped in the parking lot of a ski resort for a short time to watch the skiers coming down the mountain. Once we got to the lake we drove along the east side of the lake to South Tahoe where we were staying at Harvey%26#39;s.
Harvey%26#39;s is great. Wonderful room on the 12th floor. Enjoyed gambling at Harvey%26#39;s, Harrah%26#39;s and Bill%26#39;s. Bill%26#39;s was a little casino across from Harvey%26#39;s but it is where we had the best luck.
Being from Kansas we just had to place a little money on Kansas University to win the national championship. We watched the game from the sports booking area with several other Kansas fans. WOW - was there ever a better championship game than that? The Memphis fans were getting a little mouthy and the Kansas fans were getting a little quiet toward the end of the game when things turned our way and the game went into overtime. The place exploded in cheers and we couldn%26#39;t believe it. The mouthy Memphis fan seemed to disappear during overtime. Not sure what happened to him but there were lots of high 5%26#39;s going on among Kansas fans - and yes we made a little on that win!
Tuesday am we walked to Horizon casino where we had zero luck. Checked out of our hotel and drove around the west side of the lake to Emerald Bay. Another WOW! While we were overlooking the most fantastic view of the Bay and the wind was whipping through the area at a pretty good lick, snow started to fall. It was starting to come down heavier and heavier so we headed back down to South Tahoe where we drove back into sunshine. From there we went to Carson City - stopped at a couple casinos but were definitely not impressed.
Back to Reno, dropped car at the rental lot, caught their shuttle back to the airport and the Harrah%26#39;s shuttle took us back to the hotel. Guess we are slow learners as we tried our luck again that evening but still no luck.
In talking with others on the charter back to Kansas we didn%26#39;t find anyone that was a winner. Most were not that impressed with Reno and do not plan to go back. I think if we had spent the entire time in Reno we would have been bored but our trip to Tahoe was such a delight. Sure glad we didn%26#39;t miss out on those views.
Several workers in Reno need to learn some customer service skills as we heard several reports of bad service and experienced a few ourselves.
Overall it was an enjoyable trip but probably not we will do again.
Trip report - 4/5 - 4/8Hi Kansaslady,
I%26#39;m glad you posted a TR, because I always find it interesting to read about tourist impressions of Reno. I am curious, though, about a comment you posted about the fact that you were ';not that impressed with Reno and do not plan to go back';. Is that strictly because you were not successful gambling? It just seemed to me from your TR that you really didn%26#39;t partake in any other activities here in Reno other than food/gambling (i.e. Truckee River walk, Art Museum, Harrah%26#39;s Automobile Museum, etc.), so was curious what it was specifically about Reno that you didn%26#39;t enjoy? Sorry if that seems nosy...I just work within an industry here in town that has to do with travel, so I%26#39;m always wondering about where people%26#39;s impressions/judgments come from and what can be done to change them!?
Trip report - 4/5 - 4/8It was not just a lack of winning - I never expect to win and just enjoy it if I do hit a lucky streak. Some of the things you mentioned just are not of interest to us even though I%26#39;m sure they are very nice attractions. I guess we are more accustomed to a downtown Vegas type atmosphere where there is other entertainment going on and you didn%26#39;t have to search out things to do. They are just everywhere around you.
Another thing that stood out to us was a lack of customer service. Not only did we experience some very poor service but we heard a number of other people on our charter comment on similar situations. Being a business person that is something I notice wherever I go. Now just so there is no confusion - Peg%26#39;s was NOT one of those bad experiences. They were very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed.
I did talk to some people on the trip that had a great time in Reno. They ventured out on some buses and found some things they really enjoyed. It just wasn%26#39;t our kind of place.
Thanks for writing...I appreciate your candor. Glad you gave it a chance AND that you had an opportunity to go to Peg%26#39;s-it is definitely a locals favorite!
Reno is not for everybody just as most places. My christmas trip to Vegas was probably my last. Too crowded, too expensive, too hectic for this Old Guy! I do find puzzling however your comment about the friendliest or lack of from the various staff in Reno as I find them excellent for the most part. Then I see you are from Kansas a place my son resides (Overland Park) %26amp; I understand a bit.
Can not beat the Midwest manners.
Anyways thanks for the report
Thanks for posting your TR, I am sorry to hear your views on the customer service in Reno.
We have only been to Reno once within the past year; luckily our experience with the service was much different than yours. We stayed at Harrah%26#39;s and we were very satisfied with the customer service there. We intend to go back in June.
As for the gambling, Reno was much kinder than Vegas, we are slot players and the payouts were much better during our stay than any of our Vegas trips. In general my experience is Northern Nevada casinos have better slot play than Vegas. Can%26#39;t compare to anywhere else. Of course, the Vegas vibe will never be found anywhere in N. NV but that%26#39;s okay with us.
Again, thanks for posting, always learn something. I need to find Peg%26#39;s!
Hello Kansas Lady,
How was your experience with Advantage Car Rental in Reno? I have heard some not so pleasant stories about them... the price cannot be beat.. But then again... sometimes you do get what you pay for... I mean $125 for a car for a week is a great deal.. but still ...
Thanks,
-Steve
I use www.southwest.com to compare car rental rates.
I got a compact from Dollar for $125.00 (all taxes included) for Oct 19 thru 24th.
I might take a chance on an off brand if it was significantly cheaper, but most times I can find a name brand for close to the lowest price.
