UK to LV = Jetlag??????

Suspect Brits might be best placed to advise us on this please.

We%26#39;re flying from Manchester to Las Vegas, leaving at 10am UK time and arriving at 12.30pm USA time. We%26#39;ve never been to America before and we%26#39;re wondering whether we%26#39;re likely to be walking around like zombies for a day or two after we get there?

Grateful for any advice about how bad the effects of jet lag might be, how long the effects might last, and any tips about how we can avoid or alleviate the problem. We%26#39;re only in Vegas for 5 nights and we want to make the most of every minute.

Thanks everyone xx

UK to LV = Jetlag??????

Hi

Never found it too bad. First night you will be tired early and you will most probably wake very early. It will be going home that you will feel it. If you can get some sleep on the plane it will make alot of difference. But you will feel like a zombie for a few days when your back home.

UK to LV = Jetlag??????

If you are taking off at 10.00am the chances are that you will have been at the airport for 2-3 hours before that and, depending on travel time to Manchester Airport, you will have been up very very early that morning. Arriving in Las Vegas at 12.30 means your body will think it is 20.30 in the evening still being on UK time.

Tips to cope:-

As soon as the aircraft takes off from Manchester, put your watch forward by 8 hours. (I am assuming that you have a direct flight Manchester to Las Vegas)

Try and get a little sleep on the plane

When you check into your room - have a shower and head downstairs for a look around.

Have a light meal.

Try to go to bed at a normal time (if there is any such thing in Las Vegas!) i.e. maybe around 23.00 - midnight. Hopefully you will get a good few hours sleep then and be fresh the next morning.

When you board the flight home:-

As soon as the flight takes off put your watch back by 8 hours

Try and get as much sleep as possible. (not always easy I know)

When you get home in the UK do not be tempted to go to bed. Try and stay up until a normalish time.

Jet lag will get you to some extent but - believe me - it is worth it!!!!!

ENJOY!!!

Hi GT25 - yes the lag does tend to mess you up for the first couple of days ...you will be waking up at 4.30 am Vegas time whether you want to or not !...not alot you can do about it ...just rest up when you need to.

I suggest melatonin for resetting your body clock - it%26#39;s a gentle sleeping pill prescribed for jetlag by doctors...not freely available here ( except on ebay ) but on the chemist shelves in the US...useful for getting back to sleep if you wake up too early in LV and for getting to sleep earlier than 03.00 am back in the UK!

Btw -I am charting my recent trip -jetlag and all ! -if you want to dip into current my TR for more of an idea

if you stay in vegas time zone and go to bed as usual you wont suffer from any.

I think FlyVegas has got the times the wrong way round. LV is 8 hours behind British time and so your watch needs to go back 8 hours when you get on the plane and 8 hours forward when you leave LV.

I have to say that jetlag hit us more when we were going to LV and arriving at 12.30pm than it did on other visits to the west when we arrived at 3pm. Not sure why. We didn%26#39;t manage to stay up past 8.30pm the first night and didn%26#39;t try to fight our tiredness. We didn%26#39;t wake up particularly early and were OK after that. It%26#39;s always worse coming home - just try to resist the temptation to go to sleep during the day and then go to bed earlier in the evening if you need to.

We will be back in Vegas in October, and have always found that no matter how long the flights have been, even flights with a stopover, the exitement of being in Vegas kicks in.Last time we were there we had been on the go for about 20hours,got to our hotel at about midnight vegas time, yet we were still up and ready for the adventures ahead by about 7.30 in the morning.Back in the UK I could stay in bed all day given the chance, but I dont want to waste a minute of my time in Vegas.Although I do agree with a previous post that the sooner you get on Vegas time the better you will cope.

When you get there you wont suffer from Jetlag because of the excitment, just carry on in Vegas time and go to bed Vegas time, usually for us is 3am in the morning. But I can guarantee you this you will be wide awake by 5am.

The jetlag on the way home is the problem, one because of the time difference, but the other problems is because whilst in Vegas you will be on a high and dont want to miss out on anything but going home the lack of sleep, the amount of alcohol will have an effect.

On our first trip to Vegas/California, jet lag was a BIG problem. We were suffering for days and in some ways it affected our holiday. We were up at 5:00 am and dozing off in the late afternoon.

On our second trip. I was more determined that jet lag will not get the better of me and the trick is to adjust to the time difference as quickly as possible.

It seems you are flying via BMI from Manchester. We went at the same time and go to our hotel room about 2:00pm.

It was a case of just keeping on going until night and trying to sleep through till the morning. Do not have a snooze, the more tired you are the more likely that you will sleep through the night and quickly adjust to the time difference.

If you wake up at 7:00 am then its fine. Strolling through the strip early in the morning is a great experience when its quite with just the joggers about.

Oops sorreeeeeee!!!!

Yes - I got the times wrong. Please do not follow my original instructions for re-setting your watch or you will never recover from jet lag!!!!!!!!

Take off from Manchester and move your watch BACK 8 hours. Take off from Las Vegas and move your watch FORWARD 8 hours.

Many people have differing advice on how to beat the dreaded lag, but generally we all agree that resetting your watch on the plane is rule 1.

Sometimes i have struggled really badly and others it hasn%26#39;t bothered me, so there is no rhyme and reason, but i have spoken to a number of flight attendants on the vegas/la routes and one of the common tricks seems to be to grab about two hours sleep about 4pm US time, and then MAKE SURE YOU GET UP, grab a shower and go out again until midnight/1am ish and then try and get 5/6 hours before making sure you stay up all the following day.
