Is this a reasonable itinerary?

Hi all

Arriving in Las Vegas from Glasgow on the morning of 23 Sept to pick up a car and head out to see the sights.

I was planning on heading straight to Grand Canyon and can get the Holiday Inn Express or the Grand Hotel, not certain which would be best but i though and overnight stay would do.

Then heading to Page for 1 night and try and take in a tour.

Then head to Las Vegas for 2 or 3 nights somewhere on the strip

Bit stuck now. I%26#39;m flying out of San Francisco on the night of 2 October so planned on driving from LV up through Yosemite and then onto SF. I%26#39;ll be leaving LV on 27/28 Sept and would like at least 2 nights in Yosemite but apart from that I%26#39;m not sure which route to take or where else to stay. I%26#39;ve seen SF before so don%26#39;t need more than a night there.

Any suggestions would be great guys.

Thanks

John

I am not a ';local'; expert but I worked in Page for 2 summers and have travelled around the southwest quite a bit. I am not sure if you are a seasoned traveller in this area, but your itinerary gives you some big distances to be cover (by UK standards). It depends how much you like driving.

LV to the Grand Canyon is about 5hrs

Grand Canyon to Page is about 2/3hrs

Page to LV is another 5hrs

LV to Yosemtie is about 7hrs

Yosemite to Sanfransisco is about 4hrs

Lake Powell is great by the way - one day might not be enough, but then I am biased!!

Enjoy

Getting right off a long flight and starting a 5 hour drive may not be a great idea. Consider doing one of your ';2 or 3 nights in Las Vegas'; first to rest up a bit, you can get an early start the next day.

Irishfan...a very thoughtful, AND, wise reply...John will be EIGHT hours ahead, from a jet lag standpoint...I wouldn%26#39;t want to be on the road with him, when he starts meandering over to the left ( John, your tired brain will want to drive on the ';correct'; side)....I%26#39;m exhausted now, just reading your itinerary!..................z

Your itinerary is definately too ambitious. IrishFan is right. Get some rest first. The drive to the Canyon is a long haul and folks from the UK don%26#39;t realize what vast distances they have to cover.

Of course if you%26#39;ll be driving a Mustang Shelby GT-H you have to be careful of excessive speed. The Highway Patrol are famous for their lack of tolerence.

I agree I think you should wait until the next day to drive, it would be better to spend a night in Vegas then head out, IMO. Have a safe %26amp; good trip.!!!

Hi

Have to agree with previous posters, from experience I would not recomend more than 1 hour of travelling after you land. Plus if your flight is late in you could be driving in the dark, not a great way to start, strange roads etc.

Sounds like a good plan, but I always feel a bit jetlagged too. We Did roughly the same itinerary, we stopped in San Diego from vegas, and also Santa Barbara, would definitely reccommend Santa Barbara, its beautiful.

Good Luck

You will be too tired to want to drive to Grand Canyon straight after landing in Vegas, esp as they are 8 hours behind us and you would have just got off a 11 hour flight. Maybe stay 1 night in Las Vegas before the 6 hour drive to Grand Canyon. I am a travel agent and we sell lots of the Grand Hotel, its one of the most popular hotels in Grand Canyon. When we tailor make itineries for customers we normally stop them in Mammoth between Vegas - Yosemite. Mammoth is a ski destination during the winter but makes for a nice place to break up the long drive between Las Vegas and Yosemite.

do las vegas 1st and recover abit. Take hoover dam (Tour)route next day and make way for stop over at Williams/south rim. then take in canyon round to page. Then head for Zion national park.(Prebook accomadation always full. we stayed just outside at Carmel junction. easy walk up valley at Zion and rock formations wonderful. then one more night in vegas and go through death valley to road 395 running up the side of the Sierra Nevada. stop around mammoth lakes/bishop/lee vinning. Ready for next day to go through Tioga pass into Yosemite. wonderfull road (should be open in Sept.) then onto SF.

Yes very tight for time but have a great time. (Loads of water/food for death valley.

Regards

Graham
