Car Rental/Insurance

We will be renting a car in Las Vegas and travelling also up to Utah. Do you have to have your original insurance card or can you take a xerox copy?

Thanks.

A copy is probably fine although we get 2...one for our car and one for our wallet, so why would you want to make a copy?

You could check with your agent or insurance company to find out if I am correct.

Also if you do have an accident, the laws in the state where the accident occurs apply (again if I am correct in my thinking) and not your home state.

Topeka Duck,

We only have one insurance card and didn%26#39;t want to risk losing it and wanted to take just a copy.

Thanks for replying and I%26#39;ll check it out with our car rental company.

Irene

Gotcha...figured it was something like that. Well I offer suggestions but am also quick to admit I don%26#39;t know everything, so please double-check my thoughts since I%26#39;m not an insurance agent :)

Topeka Duck,

You%26#39;ll probably get a kick out of this. I called Alamo in Las Vegas and asked her if a copy would suffice. Her answer to me ';you can bring whatever you like';. I said, ';But will a copy be acceptable';. Answer: ';Bring whatever you like';.

Very helpful, isn%26#39;t it.

Irene

sigh...but she probably didn%26#39;t know and that was the best answer she could think of at that moment :(

I brought copies with me in August and that was just fine.

I have brought copies with me but I never once had to show it or use it (rented over 60 times in Vegas-mostly Thrifty and Dollar). My credit card company also covers my insurance. I have never been in an accident but I have returned a dented car (don%26#39;t know how that happened) and I just put the information on the forms for Thrifty-they never asked to see the card. Since it was under my deductible- my credit card company (American Express) paid for the damages (with no grief).

I think the agent%26#39;s reply meant ';who cares, nobody is going to ask for it anyway';.

I have never been asked for my insurance card. They did ask if I had insurance and seems to suffice.

I did have to show it to Thrifty while I was there. It appeared the woman was entering some of the info into the computer from the insurance card.

I would guess the rental companies run a license check to see if its valid. I wonder how many rental cars disappear with people who presented a fake license?

all they want the insurance card for is the name of the insurance company and your policy number.
